Abstract

Aloe vera is an important medicinal plant that has been used traditionally for several centuries and has subsequently attracted considerable scientific and industrial attention. The plant is particularly recognized for its succulent leaves, which contain two chemically distinct materials: the inner clear gel and the yellowish latex located beneath the leaf rind. These fractions differ in composition and consequently possess different biological and safety profiles. Aloe gel contains polysaccharides, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, phenolic compounds and other constituents, whereas the latex contains anthraquinone derivatives such as aloin. Acemannan and other polysaccharides have been investigated for their possible roles in immunological responses, cellular activity and tissue repair. Experimental studies have also reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities associated with different aloe constituents. Aloe has received particular attention in relation to wound healing, dermatological applications and metabolic health. However, clinical evidence is variable, and differences in plant material, extraction procedures, dosage and product composition make comparison among studies difficult. Safety is especially important for whole-leaf and latex-containing preparations because anthraquinone-associated constituents may produce adverse effects. Beyond therapeutic applications, Aloe vera has considerable importance in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Tissue culture, micropropagation, analytical characterization, standardized extraction and development of aloe-derived biomaterials represent promising areas for future research. This review summarizes the botanical features, major phytochemical constituents, biological properties, health-related applications, safety considerations, industrial significance and future research opportunities associated with Aloe vera.
